The Spirit of Lee Miller by Misia-O’

A capsule exhibition of portrait photography, a limited edition art photography book and a unique perfume celebrating the abstract and explosive magnificence of Lee Miller.

A model for famous photographers such as Steichen, Cocteau, Picasso, Man Ray, Lee Miller later became a talented photographer. Lee discovered the solarisation technique by accident and developed it further with Man Ray. She became an independent fashion photographer for Vogue in the 30’s and 40’s and the only female war reporter photographing concentration camps and herself in Hitler’s bath. In the later part of her life, Lee Miller turned to surrealist cooking in her artistic home, Farley Farmhouse in England, where Lee Miller Archives are held. The Spirit of Lee Miller is a tribute to her free spirited “essence”, her photography talent and her inner and outer beauty. Ami Bouhassane, Lee Miller’s grand-daughter, and Director of Lee Miller Archives will talk with Misia-O’ about her grand-mother’s intrepid life and career as a photographer for the exhibition preview opening on Wednesday 6th of July at Belle Beau Gallery, an art and photography gallery located in a 17th century Hôtel Particulier in the heart of Arles, during the festival of Les Rencontres d’Arles.

BELLE [bɛl]. n. m.BEAU [bo]. n. f.

The art gallery name BELLE [bɛl]. n. f. BEAU [bo]. n. m. on the premises of the 17c Hôtel de Grille (14 rue de Grille 13200 Arles) and the manifesto which inspired its name “Manifeste Aesthethic” is about important words and their definitions. It starts with the word “beauty” and ends with the word “desire”. When we look at something very closely, we start to feel desire for it. Desire is the essence of life. We owe it to ourselves to find meaning by delving deeper into the essence of things. Art is about the eye. It is about looking, thinking more deeply about things. Art is universal. It has no boundaries and no countries. It has no special medium. It can be painting, photography, film, sculpture, installation, even poetry. Pia Camilla Copper, Julien Batifol.
